AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC
Caution #1 : Wear protective clothing, goggles, gloves (oil causes cancer)
Caution #2 : Remove jewelery, rings, watches, long sleeves
Caution #3 : Use safe lighting with caution; avoid broken light bulb electrocution
Caution #4 : Use "RUGGED" light bulbs with thicker tulsen (?spelling) filament
Caution #5 : Block vehicle from moving; jacking up may undo emergency brake
Caution #6 : Disconnect battery
Caution #7 : Protect against dropped metal tools or parts across battery
Caution #8 : Replace burned out fuese with same amperage rating; diagnose cause first
Caution #9 : Fusible links are fuse as wires inserted between connector
Caution #10: Temp controlled radiator fans can turn on automatically with engine OFF
Caution #11: Use torque wrench to avoid breaking bolts and nuts (see charts)
Caution #12: Verify Ford or GM type transmissions seal rubber versus trans fluid
Caution #13: COLD tire pressure check
Caution #14: HOT and running auto transmssion fluid level check
Caution #15: Do not confuse ALLEN wrench/bolt with TORKS wrench/bolt or SECURITY TORK
Caution #16: Use BREAKER bar to loosen nuts and bolts BEFORE using socket wrench
Caution #17: Do not exceed 90 PSI for air compressor operated tools; use filter to paint
Caution #18: avoid sparks near batteries to avoid explosive gas ignition
Safely jumper cable connecting at least one cable last to motor frame not battery posts.
Caution #19: knock causes piston damage during acceleration by low octane gas
Use octane booster chemicals to reduce knock
Check timing advance by vacuum unit in distributor
Fuel=gaoline=petrol: How higher octane rating saves engine from piston damage avoid "knocking"
Caution #20: Dilute pure methanol anti-freeze 1/2 water before adding to radiator
Cleaning and keeping battery terminal posts clean and tight
Starters diagnosis: bad solenoid relay switch. Hot wiring.
Why you measure tire pressure cold, but measure auto transmission fluid with the car running and hot.
Diagnosis sequence for car/truck/airplane/motorcyle not running: fuel, spark.
High voltage coil care, danger
Emergency Road Tricks
Verify fuel in tank - avoid running low as sediment can clog fuel filter
Verify fuel to carb or injectors -
Verify spark - spark plug wires not cracked, shorting, broken, connected OK
Verify spark plugs not fouled or increased gap over time
Verify timing - timing light shows correct Before Top Dead Center mark on crank?
Diesel fuel
Caution: Additive diesel chemical prevet moisture to prevent moss in tank
Trick : Use 4 drops of cod liver oil to lubricate fabric in diesel fuel pump
Trick : Glow plug requires short delay after key is turned to ON before starting
Maintenance and routine service
Change oil and oil filter every 3,000 miles (see car manual); do not overfill
Change spark plugs, 1st coat with anti-seizing compoud avoid galling (self weld) into head
Modify spark plug gap to specs before reinstalling (example: .035") using gauge
Change air filter
Change distributor cap (high voltage passed from coil by rotor to each spark plug wire)
Mark each spark plug wire and each position in the cap before removing
Change rotor (metal tip loses metal as it passes voltage making poor firing)
Change from brake disk pads; coat metal backside of pad with blue plastic to reduce sqeal noise
Change antifreeze, drain, flush rust from inside engine and radiator, add 50% methanol antifreeze
Change thermostat
Change rubber belts and hoses
Change timing belt every 60,000 miles avoid engine damage on interference engine if it breaks
Change repack grease in front and rear wheel bearings
Change rubber boots surrounding universal joints on axles if cracked
Pack with same grease
Change transmission fluid and replace with same type Ford or GM or ...
Measure with car running, braked, in 1st gear, wipe dip stick, dunk, add if below crosshatch
Add air to tires only when COLD not hot per specs on side of tire (about 28 psi)
Carry 12 volt dc air compressor in trunk plugable into cigarette lighter socket 12vdc
Flat tire repair
Use kitchen dish washing soap in water to locate tire punctures
Steel belted radial repair push black rubber soaked strip into hole using steel post tool
Side wall punctures are not repairable, only if located within tread

Welding, arc electric DC
block arc from view of uninformed people passing by
arcs produce radiation that burns human skin therefore cover all skin
never look at any electric arc which burns surface of eye at the cornea
wear #10 glass lenses in arc welding helmet to block damaging radiation
wear #10 pastic lenses in arc welding helmet to block damaging radiation
never assume #10 glass lenses in arc welding helmet also blocks radiation from sun
never assume #5 glass lenses in gas goggle also blocks radiation from sun
never assume #5 glass lenses in gas goggles blocks arc welding radiation
never look directly at the sun using #10 arc weld lenses or #5 gas weld lenses
arc welders are low voltage controlled high amperage short ciruits thru arc rods
note that even a car battery meets this criteria if using a small diameter arc rod
a complete DC direct current flows from the welder, into rod, into work, back again
the arc rod melts at the tip due to high heat of short circuit at tip of arc flame
the meted rod deposits onto the piece being welded
Welding, gas cutting torch acetylene oxygen
never assume #5 glass in gas goggle also blocks radiation from sun
wear protective #5 glass lenses in gas weld goggles to prevent eye cornea burns
wear protective #5 plastic lenses in gas weld goggles to prevent eye cornea burns
insert reverse flow prevention check flow valves between hoses and regulators
prevent flash back of ignited flame back into regulators
close both acetylene and gas flow valves on both cylinders and both regulators
close both acetylene and gas flow valves on handle that has a tip attached
attach shutoff acetylene regulator left-hand thread grooved nut to acetylene cylinder
attach shutoff oyxgen regulator right-hand thread non-grooved nut to oygen cylinder
start gas flow from both cylinders to both shutoff regulators
slowly open cylinders valves and watch high pressure gas gauges rise
start gas flow from both regulators to shutoff handle with correct tip attached
slowly open acetylene handle valve and watch low pressure flow gauge rise
start acetylene gas flow from handle to tip
fully open acetylene flow valve on welding handle with tip
immediately light acetylene flame with flint
start oxygen gas flow from handle to tip, adding oxygen to already burning acetylene
limit opening oxygen to just "returning" flame back toward tip, not into tip
immediately reduce oygen flow using oxygen flow on handle if whistling occurs
slowly open oxygen flow valve, but stop before returned flame enters back into tip
weld just beyond the visible flame where it is hottest
Welding, mig feeds wire off spool and uses gas; muffler work
Welding, tig finer control, special gases
tig tips create a vortex of spinning gases that surround the weld operation on tip
the gas used prevents the normal oxidation by oxygen during tig welding
Wire wheel mounted on opposite side of electrical stone wheel grinder
Work light
Work table

TELEPHONE
POTS Plain Old Telephone System
RCA plugs were once used by telephone operators to connect calls
Tip - metal round ball at end of large old rca plug
Ring - metal shaft at middel of old rca plug
Modern RJ11C telephone has two wires that are tip and ring
DC voltage is present across the two wires during no phone calls coming in
ON HOOK means phone is hung up and calls can come in to ring the phone
OFF HOOK means phone is not hung up and receviver is not pressing down the tab
AC voltgae is present across the two wires during phone RINGING
Caution: can can shock techs that grab both wires while a call is coming in
Caution: Phone wires have polarity and are not always reversable for modems
Trick : Polarity testers to plug into RJ11C are available using LED lights
Caution: do not stand in water in a basement while working on live phone wires
